Originally designed to enhance Canada’s territorial claims on its western frontier, Canadian agricultural policy today subsidizes and controls markets in grain, dairy, and other products to ensure profitability for farms at the expense of the taxpayers. The programs nonetheless remain popular among many Canadians.
